Launched: Redesigned Environment Switcher

LaunchDarkly projects make it easy to manage feature flags from all of your software projects in one place. And thanks to environments, you can more easily manage your feature flags throughout your entire continuous delivery pipeline—from local development, to QA, staging, and production.

As your company grows, so do the number of projects and environments. We heard feedback from customers that it can be difficult to navigate between environments of the same project, or even between environments in different projects. Another frequently-heard problem is that not everyone cares about all projects and environments in the same account.

Today we’re excited to launch our vastly-improved environment switcher. It’s now easier find any environment you’re looking for, no matter how many projects or environments you have. Select a project on the left to find all its environments on the right. Click an environment on the right to switch over to it.

We’ve also introduced favorites. Clicking the star on an environment will toggle whether that environment is a favorite or not. And, if you have any favorites, they’ll be listed by default, so you can quickly navigate to the environments you work with the most.

Launched: Bulk User Targeting

LaunchDarkly Bulk User Targeting - Feature Flags / Toggles

It’s always been easy to target individual users when you create a feature flag in LaunchDarkly.  You simply enter a user’s key, name, or email into the individual targeting field to serve to target that user. But, what if you want to target tens or even hundreds of users at once?

Our new bulk user targeting feature allows you to add, remove, or replace entire user populations by entering lists of user keys or emails. Our app will resolve each user, and you can decide what to do with them.

With bulk user targeting, you can:

  • Paste a CSV list that contains thousands of user keys or e-mails
  • Create user segments locally, like a beta group, and then add them to a variation
  • Look up multiple users at once and see which users currently exist and which do not

You can trigger Bulk User Targeting from the Bulk Edit button, or by using Ctrl-V to paste a list of users from your clipboard directly into the Add Users field:

This will open a bulk targeting modal that will let you add, remove, or replace users.

Check out our documentation to learn more about bulk user targeting and how users are resolved.

We’re really excited to bring you this new feature, as many of our customers have requested it. If you have any questions or feedback, we would love to hear from you at support@launchdarkly.com.

Working at LaunchDarkly: 6 months in

Today marks my sixth month at LaunchDarkly. And what a blast it’s been! I’d been thinking of joining a small team for a while, and suddenly things fell into place and the time was ripe for a move.
Waiting for the right time
So what’s the best part about this new job? Definitely the people. We’re all friends here. We’re a tiny team building something we truly believe in and actually use daily. What’s also amazing is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we stay modest. We’re trying to make things better, and by always being supportive and constructive, we move forward. We trust and respect each other. I’ve always thought that before anything it’s the people you work with that matter the most, and that is evident at LaunchDarkly. There are inherent risks in the day-to-day life of a startup, but this raft feels surprisingly solid.

We’re also hungry to learn and grow. For example, I’m usually more at home designing and building our UI, but I try to avoid becoming too specialized. So whenever the chance comes up to roll up my sleeves and write a new API to support part of the UI, I’ll take it, and I know I’ll get help and advice. And everyone on the team is like that. No silos. We constantly question what we do and focus on one thing: improving the life of our customers. While learning and having fun.

Here’s my favorite little anecdote: before joining I’d been tutoring at a nearby school, helping a student improve his reading skills. It was awesome (and I definitely recommend it). Soon after I started at LaunchDarkly, one of our meetings happened to conflict with my tutoring schedule. At first I thought I should reschedule my session, but instead Edith just moved the meeting so that I could go spend time with my student.

That’s a big deal! We care deeply about work/life balance, and it’s not just a poster on a wall. We take time off to rest, we pause work to volunteer in the community, we sometimes work remotely, and we take time off to celebrate our achievements, in style, by playing Trivial Pursuit 20th Anniversary! Just kidding! That never happened…

Awkward smile

I’m really excited to see what the next year has in store for us. We just a launched two big features, and there are more coming off the press soon. Our team is also growing, and I can’t wait to see where we go!
